Russell Athletic is one of the most heritage-rich sportswear brands in the world. Founded in 1902 by Benjamin Russell in Alexander City, Alabama, the company initially produced underwear and undershirts. In 1926/1930, Benjamin Russell Jr. and his father developed the first crew-neck sweatshirt made from cotton jersey, an invention that established the sweatshirt as a classic garment. In the 1960s, Russell Athletic was the largest sportswear manufacturer in the USA, kitting out high-school and college teams among others. In 2006, Russell Brands was acquired by Fruit of the Loom (a subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway); since then, Russell Athletic has been the group's flagship brand, uniting American sports heritage with modern collections of sweatshirts, hoodies, T-shirts and sportswear.
